The 2001 Capitol Visitor Center Commemorative Coins were one of two special coin series issued by the U.S. Mint in 2001. Released on February 28, 2001, the collection included six distinct coins, offered in both proof and uncirculated versions.

Coin Details

The collection featured three designs, each minted in proof and uncirculated finishes:

  • 2001 Capitol Visitor Center $5 Gold Coin
  • 2001 Capitol Visitor Center Silver Dollar
  • 2001 Capitol Visitor Center Half Dollar (Clad Coin)

These coins were authorized under the United States Capitol Visitor Center Commemorative Coin Act of 1999 (Public Law 106-126). The act set the maximum mintages for each coin:

  • Gold Coin: 100,000 pieces
  • Silver Dollar: 500,000 pieces
  • Half Dollar: 750,000 pieces

$5 Gold Coin Design

The obverse of the $5 gold coin features a single Corinthian column, symbolizing the architecture of the U.S. Capitol. The reverse showcases an image of the Capitol’s original structure. Both designs were created by former U.S. Mint Chief Sculptor and Engraver Elizabeth Jones.

Silver Dollar Design

The silver dollar’s obverse depicts the original Capitol building structure overlaid on the modern Capitol design, illustrating the evolution of the historic site. This design was crafted by artist Marika Somogyi. On the reverse, a bald eagle draped in a banner is featured, a design by U.S. Mint sculptor and engraver John Mercanti.
