The 2001 Capitol Visitor Center Commemorative Coins were part of a dual-coin series issued by the U.S. Mint that year. These coins were released on February 28, 2001, and comprised six distinct pieces.
The collection featured proof and uncirculated versions of three different coins:
- The 2001 Capitol Visitor Center $5 Gold Coin
- The 2001 Capitol Visitor Center Silver Dollar
- The 2001 Capitol Visitor Center Half Dollar Clad Coin
Congress authorized the series with the passage of the United States Capitol Visitor Center Commemorative Coin Act of 1999 (Public Law 106-126). The legislation set a cap on mintage quantities: 100,000 for the $5 gold coins, 500,000 for the silver dollars, and 750,000 for the half dollars.
The $5 gold coin’s obverse features a Corinthian column, the same style used in the Capitol building, designed by former U.S. Mint Chief Sculptor/Engraver Elizabeth Jones. The reverse showcases an image of the Capitol building’s original structure.
The silver dollar’s obverse design overlays the Capitol’s original structure with its modern counterpart. This design was created by Marika Somogyi. On the reverse, a bald eagle is depicted draped in a banner, designed by U.S. Mint sculptor/engraver John Mercanti.
