The 2008 Bald Eagle Commemorative Coins represented the United States Mint’s only commemorative coin program that year. Released on January 15, 2008, the series included three different coin types:
- 2008 Bald Eagle $5 Gold Coin
- 2008 Bald Eagle Silver Dollar
- 2008 Bald Eagle Half Dollar Clad Coin
These coins were struck in both proof and uncirculated versions, resulting in a total of six distinct coin variations. As with other commemorative issues, the gold coins were made with 90% gold content, while the silver dollars contained 90% silver. The maximum mintage limits were set at 100,000 for the gold coins, 500,000 for the silver dollars, and 750,000 for the clad half dollars.
The coins were authorized by the American Bald Eagle Recovery and National Emblem Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law 108-486), which aimed to celebrate the recovery of the American Bald Eagle and the national emblem.
