The 2012 Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar was issued to commemorate the bicentennial of the writing of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” which later became the United States national anthem. Released on March 5, 2012, this silver dollar was launched alongside the $5 Star-Spangled Banner Gold Coin to mark the anniversary.

The silver dollar, struck in 90% silver, measures 1.5 inches in diameter, adhering to the typical specifications for modern commemorative dollar coins. The U.S. Mint planned a maximum mintage of 500,000 coins, available in both proof and uncirculated versions. Initially, the coins were priced at $49.95 for the proof and $44.95 for the uncirculated versions, with an introductory offer running until April 5, 2012. Afterward, the prices were set to increase by $5 per coin. These commemorative coins were available for purchase directly from the U.S. Mint’s official website at

In addition to the silver dollars and the proof and uncirculated gold coins, the U.S. Mint offered a two-coin proof set. This set included one proof silver dollar and one proof $5 gold coin, with an introductory price of $579.30, subject to weekly adjustments based on fluctuating gold prices.

The Star-Spangled Banner Silver Dollar and Gold Coin were authorized by the Star-Spangled Banner Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law 111-232), which was introduced by Congressman C.A. Dutch Ruppersberger of Maryland and signed into law by President Barack Obama on August 16, 2010.

Following the release of the coin designs, Congressman Ruppersberger expressed pride in the effort: “This coin is a great honor and the product of years of hard work in an extremely competitive process. It will help raise much-needed funds to properly celebrate the role Marylanders played in our nation’s victory and share that rich history with the country.”
