Dallas, Texas (October 18, 2024) — Heritage Auctions will offer a selection of rare and highly sought-after coins from the Coenen Collection in its upcoming World & Ancient Coins Platinum Session and Signature® Auction on November 1-2, 2024. The Coenen Collection is regarded as one of the finest assemblages of Dutch and Dutch Colonial coins ever collected, and these pieces are expected to captivate numismatists worldwide.

Cris Bierrenbach, Executive Vice President of International Numismatics at Heritage Auctions, remarked, “This auction is exceptional, with offerings that will excite both world coin collectors and ancient coin enthusiasts. The Coenen Collection is widely regarded as the premier compilation of Netherlands and Dutch Colonial coins. In addition, the ancient coin section features numerous top-tier examples, particularly from the Byzantine era, many of which are among the finest certified examples.”

One of the standout pieces in the Coenen Collection is the Provincial Gold Proof Pattern Ducaton (Silver Rider) 1672, graded PR63 by NGC. This coin is the only certified example of its kind across both NGC and PCGS, and it is also the first such coin to appear at auction in recent memory. This 11 Ducat weight piece, originally struck in 1672 during the height of the Netherlands’ global influence, is a highly coveted specimen, especially given its rarity as a gold off-metal issue. The Ducaton series, originally conceived in 1659, is a key part of Dutch numismatic history.

Also featured from the Coenen Collection is a Willem I Silver Proof Trial 25 Cents 1817, graded PR62 by NGC. This coin, which was struck as part of trials for the coinage set to be issued in 1819, is considered exceedingly rare. Only this single example has been certified, and it has not been seen at auction in recent years. Other notable pieces include a Zeeland Provincial Gold Off-Metal Ducat 1764 and a Willem I Gold Ducat 1824-B.

For collectors of British coins, the auction will include over 200 lots, including the Victoria Gold “Coronation” Medal 1838 and a George III Gold Proof Sovereign 1817 (graded PR63 Cameo by NGC). The Victoria Gold “Coronation” Medal, designed by Benedetto Pistrucci, is an especially rare and valuable item, ranking among the top three examples known to collectors.

Among the top British highlights are a Charles II Gold 5 Guineas 1673 and a Victoria Proof “Gothic” Crown 1847, graded PR62 by NGC.

The auction will also feature several key French coins, including Republic Gold 100 Francs coins from 1896 and 1894, as well as a historically significant Napoleon Gold “King of Rome” Medal 1811, minted to commemorate the birth of Napoleon’s son.
