The Australian Kangaroo Gold Bullion Coin has its origins dating back to 1987, when the Perth Mint introduced the “Australian Nugget” series. Initially, these coins came in one-ounce and half-ounce sizes, each composed of 99.99% fine gold. Over time, the series has evolved, but it remains one of the most highly sought-after gold bullion coins worldwide.
In the early years of the program, the reverse designs featured iconic gold nuggets, which led to the series being named the “Australian Nugget.” However, by 1990, the design was changed to depict a kangaroo, marking a significant shift in the coin’s imagery. Subsequent years saw variations in the designs, with the addition of wallabies and wallaroos. In 2008, the Perth Mint officially rebranded the smaller coins in the series, renaming them the Australian Kangaroo series.
Today, the Australian Kangaroo series is known for its annually changing reverse designs, featuring the iconic kangaroo for which the series is named. The larger-sized coins also depict kangaroos, though their design remains unchanged.
The Perth Mint has produced various sizes of the coin over the years, ranging from a full kilogram down to 1/20th of an ounce. However, the most popular sizes remain the one-ounce, half-ounce, quarter-ounce, and tenth-ounce coins, with the one-ounce version being the most favored by collectors and investors.
