The Chinese Panda Gold Bullion Coin was first introduced by the People’s Republic of China in 1982. Since its debut, the coin has developed a dedicated following among collectors and investors worldwide. This is due to its 99.9% pure gold content and its unique reverse design, which changes each year to feature a beloved panda.

These coins are minted in five sizes: 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce, and 1/20 ounce. All but the smallest size were available from the start, with the 1/20 ounce coin being introduced in the following year. Along with the yearly change in reverse design, the face values of the coins have also evolved. Initially, they were struck with values of 100, 50, 25, 10, and 5 Yuan. Over time, these values were updated to 500, 200, 100, 50, and 20 Yuan, respectively.

The China Mint has also refined its minting techniques, allowing the designs on the reverse of the coins to become even more unique. The panda imagery is consistently featured, but through advanced methods like reflection, the Mint has been able to capture the distinct black-and-white pattern of these creatures in a striking way.

Additionally, there have been rare editions of the Chinese Panda Gold Bullion Coin in larger sizes, such as five and twelve ounces. Some coins also include mintmarks, with the “S” mintmark representing the Shanghai Mint and the “Y” mintmark signifying the Shenyang Mint. However, not all coins bear a mintmark.
