Sonora, CA – The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is intensifying its efforts to promote road safety during the busy Thanksgiving weekend. From 6:01 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 27, until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 1, CHP officers across the state will take part in the annual Thanksgiving Maximum Enforcement Period (MEP). The initiative focuses on ensuring safe driving habits, promoting seat belt use, and maintaining sobriety on California highways.
“Thanksgiving is a time for families to come together, and our goal is to make sure everyone arrives safely,” said CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee. “We encourage drivers to prepare their vehicles, leave early to avoid traffic congestion, wear their seat belts, and never drive under the influence. Safety starts with making responsible choices on the road.”
During last year’s Thanksgiving MEP, CHP officers made 1,047 DUI arrests and responded to 27 fatal accidents within their jurisdiction. Of the 17 people killed in these incidents, five were not wearing seat belts, highlighting the critical need for proper safety measures. CHP reminds all motorists to wear their seat belts, stay focused on the road, follow speed limits, and avoid driving impaired to help ensure a safe holiday travel experience for everyone.
