The Royal Canadian Mint has been producing the Canadian Maple Leaf Gold Bullion Coin since 1979. Initially, it was only available in a one-ounce size, but over the years, several fractional sizes were introduced.
Today, the Royal Canadian Mint offers the One Ounce Gold Maple Leaf, as well as 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, 1/10 ounce, and 1/20 ounce versions. All these coins are made from 99.99% pure gold, also known as 24-karat gold, and have face values of $50, $20, $10, $5, and $1, respectively.
When the Gold Maple Leaf was first released, it was one of only two widely produced gold bullion coins in the world, alongside the South African Krugerrand, which had been launched about 12 years earlier. Over time, the Gold Maple Leaf has gained significant popularity, partly due to its backing by the Canadian government, which guarantees both its weight and purity.
To date, the Royal Canadian Mint has sold over 20 million troy ounces of Gold Maple Leaf coins. It also takes pride in being the first bullion coin to be minted from .9999 fine gold.
