The Calaveras County Superior Court will begin accepting petitions for the newly launched Community Assistance, Recovery, and Empowerment (CARE) Court on Monday, December 2.

The CARE Court initiative, signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 14, 2022, is designed to address the needs of severely impaired individuals suffering from mental health issues, substance use disorders, homelessness, or incarceration. It focuses on assisting individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia spectrum or other psychotic disorders by providing tailored treatment, support services, and a comprehensive housing plan.

Last year, neighboring Tuolumne County was among the seven pilot counties to roll out this program in October 2023. Now, the remaining counties, including Calaveras, are implementing CARE Court this year.

In Calaveras County, petitions can be filed at the Superior Court’s Self-Help Center or the Clerk’s Office, located at 400 Government Center Drive in San Andreas. Filing a petition under the CARE Act is free of charge.

Hearings for CARE Court cases will take place in Courtroom 4 on Fridays at 8:30 a.m. To ensure privacy, all petitions, reports, and proceedings are confidential and closed to the public. The court also offers self-help resources to assist petitioners, respondents, and their families throughout the process.
