The 2003 First Flight Centennial Commemorative Coins were the sole commemorative coin series released by the U.S. Mint in 2003. These coins honored the 100th anniversary of the Wright Brothers’ groundbreaking first powered flight, which took place on December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina.

Coins in the Series

The series included three distinct coins:

  1. $10 Gold Coin
  2. Silver Dollar
  3. Half Dollar Clad Coin

Each coin was struck in both proof and uncirculated finishes, as mandated by the First Flight Commemorative Coin Act (Public Law 105-124). This legislation required the coin designs to represent the historic flight of Orville and Wilbur Wright.

$10 Gold Coin

The obverse of the $10 Gold Coin features a detailed portrayal of the Wright Brothers, designed by U.S. Mint sculptor/engraver Donna Weaver. The reverse, also crafted by Weaver, depicts the iconic 1903 Wright Flyer in mid-flight. Both proof and uncirculated versions of this coin were produced.

Silver Dollar

The obverse of the Silver Dollar, created by U.S. Mint sculptor/engraver Jim Ferrell, showcases a profile of Orville and Wilbur Wright. This design is inspired by the George T. Morgan artwork used on the Congressional Gold Medal awarded to the brothers in 1909. The reverse, designed by Norman E. Nemeth, also features the Wright 1903 Flyer in flight. Both proof and uncirculated versions were available for collectors.
