On Thursday, February 16, 2012, collectors will have the opportunity to purchase a limited-edition Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar Defenders of Freedom Set for $51.95. This set will be released at noon ET, coinciding with the launch of the proof and uncirculated versions of the Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar.

The Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar Defenders of Freedom Set has been shrouded in mystery until recently, when the U.S. Mint added the product details to its website. The set is limited to just 50,000 units, with a household limit of 100 sets. Each set includes:

  • A proof version of the Infantry Soldier Silver Dollar
  • A replica dog tag on a miniature chain

The items will be packaged in a custom folder that also includes the silver dollar, the dog tag, and a printed quote from President John F. Kennedy highlighting the Army’s motto.

In addition to the Defenders of Freedom Set, individual uncirculated and proof Infantry Soldier Silver Dollars will also go on sale, priced at $44.95 and $49.95 respectively. The Defenders of Freedom Set is priced just $2 more than the individual proof coin, making it an appealing option for collectors. The set’s attractive packaging and the addition of the dog tag should resonate with veterans and coin enthusiasts alike. There has already been feedback on online forums, with some suggesting that the set’s 50,000-unit limit may be too low, while the 100-set per household limit could be too high.

Both the uncirculated and proof Infantry Silver Dollars feature designs that honor the courage, pride, sacrifice, and history of the Infantry. The obverse depicts a modern Infantry soldier, charging forward on rocky terrain, encouraging fellow soldiers to follow, a visual representation of the Infantry’s motto, “Follow Me.” The reverse displays the crossed rifles insignia, the symbol of the Infantry branch.
