PIEDMONT, Calif. (AP) — A tragic early morning crash involving a Tesla Cybertruck claimed the lives of three individuals and left one person seriously injured in Northern California on Wednesday.
Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers reported that the crash occurred at approximately 3:10 a.m. He indicated that excessive speed might have been a contributing factor, although the investigation is still ongoing.
The victims were returning from a gathering when the single-vehicle collision happened. Chief Bowers declined to elaborate on the event or share further information, citing privacy concerns for the victims’ families. However, he confirmed that a separate driver, who had also attended the same gathering, managed to rescue the sole survivor from the wreckage.
Despite initial efforts by responding officers to control the flames with fire extinguishers, the fire department was able to extinguish the blaze quickly. Piedmont Fire Chief Dave Brannigan noted that the rapid containment of the fire suggested the truck’s lithium-ion battery had likely not ignited. Instead, he described the incident as resembling a more typical vehicle fire.
