The Glacier National Park Silver Uncirculated Coin is the second five-ounce silver coin released by the United States Mint in 2011 as part of a collectible series. This coin, honoring Glacier National Park in Montana, was officially scheduled for release on October 25, 2011.
A Part of the America the Beautiful Program
This uncirculated coin is a key piece of the U.S. Mint’s America the Beautiful Five Ounce Uncirculated Coin Program. These coins, created for collectors, are crafted from five ounces of .999 fine silver and are the numismatic counterparts to the America the Beautiful Silver Bullion Coins™. Both series share a common design and composition, celebrating sites of national significance across the United States.
In total, 56 unique sites—one from each state, the District of Columbia, and five U.S. territories—are represented in these series, with five coins released each year from 2010 to 2021.
The obverse of the Glacier National Park coin features a portrait of George Washington, the first President of the United States, surrounded by the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and QUARTER DOLLAR. This design by John Flanagan originally appeared on the circulating quarter dollar in 1932.
The reverse, designed by AIP Associate Designer Barbara Fox and sculpted by Charles Vickers, showcases a close-up of a mountain goat with Montana’s Mount Reynolds in the background. The reverse also includes the inscriptions GLACIER, MONTANA, 2011, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
