Heritage Auctions’ January 14-19 FUN US Coins Signature® Auction promises an exceptional lineup of rare and prestigious treasures, further cementing its reputation as the world’s leading numismatic auctioneer.

1927-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS65+ PCGS CAC
One of the standout offerings in this auction is the extraordinary Mississippi Collection of Double Eagles, a meticulously assembled set of $20 gold coins.

“Condition, completeness, and rarity are key principles for any collector looking to enhance their collection,” explains Sam Foose, Consignment Director of Numismatics at Heritage Auctions. “The collector behind this remarkable set spent over five decades adhering to those principles. Double eagles are among the most important coins for serious numismatists, and this collection not only includes all the key dates but does so in outstanding condition. Collectors will find truly rare and exceptional pieces here that will significantly strengthen their next collections.”

Key Highlights from the Mississippi Collection of Double Eagles:

1927-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle, MS65+ PCGS CAC
Regarded as the rarest regular-issue 20th-century American coin across copper, silver, or gold, the 1927-D Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle is a treasure in every sense. Of the 12 to 13 known examples, only seven are realistically obtainable by collectors. Notably, in the summer of 1932, the Treasury Department offered this and other gold coins to collectors at face value plus shipping. This specific coin is an exceptional specimen, both historically and conditionally significant.

1883 Double Eagle, PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS
Another highlight is an immaculate 1883 Double Eagle graded PR66 Deep Cameo PCGS. It is the second-finest of only 92 proof examples minted that year. This particular coin was first recorded in May 1901 in Ed Frossard’s catalog of the Howard Newcomb and Edmund R. Wolcott Collections, where it was simply described as “1883 Brilliant proof.” It was purchased for $22 by collector John M. Clapp, whose son later inherited the collection. The Clapp Estate eventually sold the collection intact to Louis E. Eliasberg in 1942 in a landmark private transaction.

1932 Saint-Gaudens Twenty, MS64 PCGS CAC
With the infamous 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle restricted from private ownership, the 1932 Saint-Gaudens Twenty holds the distinction of being the last collectible coin in this beloved series. Despite a reported mintage of over 1.1 million, the 1932 issue remains highly elusive. Numismatic research suggests that only 175 examples escaped vault storage, with sales records accounting for just 113 pieces sold to collectors and institutions. This example is graded MS64 PCGS CAC, one of just 33 at that grade, with only 43 finer known.
