Walking Liberty Silver Half Dollar Overview
At the beginning of the 20th century, President Theodore Roosevelt launched an initiative to enhance the design of U.S. coins. The redesign process spanned several years, leading to the creation of two of the most celebrated coin designs in American history — the $20 Saint-Gaudens Liberty Double Eagle and the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. Both are widely regarded for their exceptional artistry, making them favorites among collectors.
The Walking Liberty Half Dollar’s design was crafted by renowned artist and sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. Weinman, who immigrated to the United States at the age of 10, exhibited a passion for art from an early age. By 15, he was diligently pursuing his artistic studies. While best known for his work on this half dollar and the Winged Liberty Head (Mercury Dime), which was issued from 1916 to 1945, Weinman always preferred being recognized for his sculptures rather than his medallic work.
